As a child growing up, Darlene Simpkins does not know who her father is. She grows up in poverty with a drunken, loose-moralled mother, who finds a wealthy young man, Harold Murdoch, to blame for her daughter's conception.Fifty years later Darlene is now Matron-in-Charge of a retirement home called Sunshine Gardens, where Harold, now a lonely old man, is a resident.
