Synopsis "Love: Thirty Six Poems from Godey's Lady's Book"

Love. No matter how many poems about love there are in the world, poets seem to find new ways to express the experience of it. This volume collects thirty six nineteenth century love poems from the widely popular Godey's Lady's Book. They are expressions of love from many perspectives: new love, love from a distance, married love, unrequited love, love that has stood the test of time, and the nature of love itself. Poets represented in this volume include, among others, Barry Cornwall, Lucretia Maria Davidson, George Pope Morris, Mary Spenser Pease, William Gilmore Simms, F. H. Stauffer, H. T. Tuckerman, and N. P. Willis. Three poems in the collection are from Hale's Ladies' Magazine prior to its merger with Godey's. One poem is from an 1881 issue of Godey's after it had been transferred to new owners and editors. Many are reprinted here for the first time. Whether you are in love now or not, these poems have endured and are presented here for you to enjoy.
