Jorge Amado (1912-2001) was a prominent Brazilian writer, born in Bahia. He studied Law in Rio de Janeiro, but primarily devoted himself to literature and politics. A member of the Brazilian Communist Party, he was elected deputy and participated in the National Constituent Assembly. Due to his political activism, he suffered exiles in Argentina, Uruguay, France, and Czechoslovakia.

His prolific work includes novels, stories, memoirs, biographies, theater, and children's literature. Among his most notable titles are "Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon" (1958), "Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands" (1966), and "Tent of Miracles" (1969). Throughout his career, he received awards such as the Jabuti Prize and the Luís de Camões Prize.
