El héroe discreto, de Mario Vargas Llosa, autor de obras de la narrativa hispanoamericana como Travesuras de la niña mala o El hablador, es una novela en la que dos hombres puestos a prueba por la vida descubren el verdadero sentido del coraje y la lealtad. Un libro lleno de humor, con elementos propios del melodrama, donde Piura y Lima ya no son espacios físicos, sino reinos de la imaginación poblados por los personajes de este gran escritor.

El héroe discreto narra la historia paralela de dos personajes: el ordenado y entrañable Felícito Yanaqué, un pequeño empresario de Piura, que es extorsionado; y de Ismael Carrera, un exitoso hombre de negocios, dueño de una aseguradora en Lima, quien urde una sorpresiva venganza contra sus dos hijos holgazanes que quisieron verlo muerto. Ambos personajes son, a su modo, discretos rebeldes que intentan hacerse cargo de sus propios destinos, pues tanto Ismael como Felícito le echan un pulso al curso de los acontecimientos. Mientras Ismael desafía todas las convenciones de su clase, Felícito se aferra a unas pocas máximas para sentar cara al chantaje. No son justicieros, pero están por encima de las mezquindades de su entorno para vivir según sus ideales y deseos. Viejos conocidos del mundo vargasllosiano aparecen en estas páginas: el sargento Lituma y los inconquistables, don Rigoberto, doña Lucrecia y Fonchito, todos moviéndose ahora en un Perú muy próspero.

Jorge Mario Pedro Vargas Llosa (Arequipa, March 28, 1936), known as Mario Vargas Llosa, 1st Marquis of Vargas Llosa, is a Peruvian writer who also holds Spanish nationality since 1993 and Dominican nationality since June 2022. Considered one of the most important contemporary novelists and essayists, his works have received numerous awards, including the Nobel Prize in Literature 2010, the Cervantes Prize 1994 —considered the most important in the Spanish language—, the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature 1986, the Biblioteca Breve Prize 1962, the Rómulo Gallegos Prize 1967, and the Planeta Prize 1993, among others. Alongside Gabriel García Márquez, Julio Cortázar, and Carlos Fuentes, he is one of the central figures of the Latin American boom

He rose to fame in the 1960s with novels such as The Time of the Hero (1963), The Green House (1966), and Conversation in the Cathedral (1969). He continued to prolifically cultivate various literary genres, such as essays, articles, and theater. Several of his works have been adapted into films and television. Most of his novels are set in Peru and explore his views on Peruvian society; however, in The War of the End of the World (1981), The Feast of the Goat (2000), and The Dream of the Celt (2010) he sets his plots in other countries.
