Synopsis "Chairman Of The Board"

Hugh Osborne's family emigrated from Britain to the other side of the World. Born on arrival in New Zealand, eldest son Hugh made the most of his opportunity, bending the landscape to his will, creating success as a farmer, butcher, postmaster — and for sixteen years, chairman of the local co-operative dairy company. Hugh could have been literally anyone of his ilk. His journey characterised the pioneer era of New Zealand, the cooperatives that lent their capital and ambition to the enterprise, helping to establish and transform the nascent dairy industry that today leads the World.Otherwise Hugh was a recognised leader in the community he did so much to create. There wasn't much that happened in Apiti, that didn't have his fingerprints on it somewhere. One contemporary newspaper account of the town even christened it "Osborneville." Along the way, like many other families in the area, Hugh lost son Robert to the War in the gallant battle for control of the middle East, in 1917, and his sacrifice is remembered here. The story of Hugh Osborne, of the community he was instrumental in creating, is the story of New Zealand, 1886-1920.
