He received numerous awards, including the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature, the Médicis Prize for the novel Leviathan, the Independent Spirit Award for the screenplay of Smoke, and the Best Book of the Year Award from the Madrid Booksellers Guild for The Book of Illusions. He was named a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters of France. His work is translated into more than forty languages.
