Makoto Wada
Makoto Wada (1936–2019) was a prominent Japanese illustrator, essayist, and film director, born in Osaka. He studied at Tama University of Arts and won the Japan Advertising Art Award in 1957. Throughout his career, he designed over 2,000 covers for the literary magazine Shūkan Bunshun between 1972 and 2017, and collaborated with the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper from 1992 until 2018

In addition to his role as an illustrator, Wada was passionate about cinema. In 1984, he made his directorial debut with Mahjong hōrōki and, in 1988, directed Kaitō Ruby, a comedy that earned him the Best Director award at the Blue Ribbon Awards. His last film work was Round About Midnight in 1999. Throughout his career, he worked with actor Hiroyuki Sanada on several of his films

In his personal life, he was married to Remi Hirano since 1972, with whom he had two children: Sho, guitarist and vocalist of the band Triceratops, and Ritsu. Makoto Wada passed away on October 7, 2019, at the age of 83 due to pneumonia
