Lev Nikolaevi Tolstoi
Lev Tolstoy is considered, along with Dostoevsky, the most important Russian writer of the second half of the 19th century. A member of an old noble family, his childhood and adolescence were spent between Moscow, the large family estate of Yasnaya Polyana, and Kazan, where he enrolled at the university in 1844. He participated in the Caucasian War and was an artillery officer. Among his works are Childhood, Adolescence, and Youth, The Cossacks, and Resurrection. With War and Peace and Anna Karenina, he earned the respect of his contemporaries and a prominent place in the history of world literature.
