Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes (Astoria, Oregon, 1944) is an American writer and war veteran, known for his deep exploration of the war experience and its consequences. A Yale graduate and Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, he served as a Marine infantry lieutenant in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Navy Cross, the Bronze Star, two Navy Commendation Medals for valor, two Purple Hearts, and ten Air Medals. His combat experience and subsequent struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder have significantly influenced his literary work.

His first novel, Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War (2010), based on his experiences, was critically acclaimed and received awards such as the Colby Award and the W.Y. Boyd Literary Award for Excellence in Military Fiction. He followed with What It Is Like to Go to War (2011), a non-fiction work about the experience of combat and reintegration into civilian life, and Deep River (2019), a family saga about Finnish immigrants in the northwest United States. In 2024 he published Cold Victory, set during the Cold War. His writing is characterized by an intense and reflective narrative on war, identity, and human resilience.
