Claude Kappler
Claude Kappler was a Nazi war criminal known for his role during the German occupation of Rome in World War II. Born on September 3, 1907, in Stuttgart, Germany, Kappler joined the SS and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a high-ranking officer of the Sicherheitsdienst (SD), the SS intelligence service. In 1943, he was appointed head of the Gestapo and the SD in Rome, where he played a key role in suppressing the Italian resistance.
His most infamous act occurred in March 1944, when after a partisan attack that killed 33 German soldiers, Kappler organized the Ardeatine Caves massacre: 335 Italian civilians were executed in retaliation. At the end of the war, he was captured by the Allies, tried in Italy, and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1948.
During his imprisonment, Kappler converted to Catholicism and was frequently visited by priest Hugh O'Flaherty, who had protected numerous people persecuted by the Nazi regime. In 1977, Kappler escaped from prison with the help of his wife, hidden in a suitcase. He lived in Germany until his death from cancer in 1978. His legacy is marked by one of the most atrocious crimes of Nazism in Italy.
