Das Kokinshu/Kokin-wakashu ist die früheste offizielle Anthologie japanischer Poesie. Die kritische Auslese von 1111 Liedern aus der Privatsammlung Man'yoshu gilt bis heute als die einflussreichste Gedichtsammlung jener Zeit; sie prägte die japanische Poesie bis ins 19. Jahrhundert. Mit dem vorliegenden Wörterbuch schafft Karl Florenz eine wichtige Verbindung zu spezifischen Ausdrücken des Alt-Japanischen und verschafft Zugang zu dem bis heute faszinierenden Ausdruck japanischer Poesie. Karl Florenz, 1865 in Erfurt geboren, gilt als Pionier der deutschen Japanologie. Er war in Deutschland der erste Lehrstuhlinhaber dieses Faches und wird oft als eigentlicher Begründer der japanischen Germanistik genannt.
