Synopsis "Wisdom Takes Work. Timeless Stoic values from the multimillion-selling author of THE DAILY STOIC"

THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Foster curiosity, discernment and life-changing wisdom: book 4 in the bestselling Stoic Virtues series

'Some authors give advice. Ryan Holiday distils wisdom' CAL NEWPORT, bestselling author of Deep Work

'Ryan Holiday is one of his generation's finest thinkers' STEVEN PRESSFIELD, author of The War of Art
Wisdom is central to a meaningful life. It gives us perspective, reveals knowledge and guides our path. Without it, our best qualities become our worst: courage turns to foolhardiness, self-discipline to cruelty, justice to empty moralising. We all aspire to be wise - but wisdom is earned.

In this fourth and final instalment of his bestselling Stoic Virtues series, Ryan Holiday uncovers tried and true methods for cultivating wisdom. Drawing on lessons from heroes across history, including Marcus Aurelius, Abraham Lincoln, Maya Angelou and Joan Didion, he shows how to keep an open mind in times of division and disruption; to listen more than we talk; to think with nuance and ruthlessly question our own beliefs. Through cautionary figures like Elon Musk, he shows how dangerous intelligence can be without wisdom - and how we can all escape today's traps of tribalism, certainty and self-righteousness.

Are you open to listening? Are you willing to question? Are you here to learn? Wisdom is work. But it's worth it.

Ryan Holiday (Sacramento, California, June 16, 1987) is one of the most influential authors and popularizers of practical philosophy today. After dropping out of the University of California to become an apprentice to Robert Greene, he began his career as the marketing director of American Apparel and founded the Brass Check agency, advising giants of the tech industry and international bestsellers. His first book, Trust Me, I’m Lying (2012), exposed the manipulative mechanisms of digital journalism and marked the beginning of a prolific literary career. Global recognition came with The Obstacle Is the Way (2014), a pioneering work in the modern dissemination of Stoicism and a reference for elite athletes, NFL coaches, political leaders, and millions of readers.

Following this work, titles such as Ego Is the Enemy (2016), The Daily Stoic (2016), Stillness Is the Key (2019), Lives of the Stoics (2020), Courage Is Calling (2021), Discipline Is Destiny (2022), and Right Thing, Right Now (2024) followed, consolidating a series dedicated to the cardinal virtues of Stoicism. His books have sold over ten million copies, translated into more than forty languages, and regularly top the bestseller lists of the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. Holiday has been awarded recognitions such as “Inc. Top 10 Marketing Books” and is considered one of the most read and followed philosophy popularizers in the world. He currently resides on the outskirts of Austin, Texas, where he also runs The Painted Porch, his own bookstore, and continues to inspire a global audience through lectures, The Daily Stoic podcast, and new publications.
