Ce récit de voyageur est à la fois une histoire d'émigration et du lancement d'une carrière coloniale, une vue d'ensemble de l'agronomie domingoise au faîte de sa réussite, et un mémoire de la Révolution qui venait de détruire la colonie. Son auteur, qui côtoyait certains de ses leaders, était un homme de terrain avec une large expérience de la colonie avant et après 1789 dont le parcours révolutionnaire était hors du commun. Son texte est d'une grande valeur à cause des nombreux épisodes et détails historiques dont il reste parfois l'unique témoignage.
