"Desde hace tiempo, una «misteriosa cosa» se oculta en alta mar, sorprendiendo a barcos y navíos, provocando accidentes, percances y extrañas desapariciones. Nadie sabe con exactitud qué puede ser esa cosa: ¿un animal?, ¿un barco abandonado?, ¿restos de un naufragio?
Existen infinidad de elucubraciones sobre el misterioso ser que habita en las profundidades del océano, pero una cosa está clara, el extraño monstruo existe. Todos los marineros describen de forma parecida a esa insólita criatura que, según cuentan, es mucho más grande que una ballena y va todavía más rápido.
Ante este misterioso suceso deciden hacer una expedición para averiguar qué es realmente esa cosa. De esta forma, el señor Aronnax, profesor de historia natural en el Museo de París, se unirá junto a su criado, Consejo, a la embarcación de la fragata Abraham Lincoln bajo las órdenes del comandante Farragut.
