Die vorliegenden Erzählungen, die bereits zu seinen Lebzeiten unter dem Titel Ein Landarzt erschienen sind, hat Franz Kafka (1883-1924) größtenteils im Goldenen Gäßchen auf dem Hradschin zu Papier gebracht. Kafka beschwört in den kurzen Texten eine teils irrationale, teils unberechenbare, stets beängstigende Welt, der man kaum entkommen kann. Einmal löst das Fehlläuten der Arztglocke eine Unglückskette aus, ein anderes Mal tauchen fremdartige Nomaden auf, denen selbst der Kaiser machtlos gegenübersteht. Sprechende Schakale oder der vieldeutige Odradek entführen den Leser ins Surreale. Gibt es einen Ausweg aus dieser Beängstigung? Beim Streben nach dem 'Gesetz' gibt der Türhüter eine Antwort: 'Es ist möglich, jetzt aber nicht.'
