Synopsis "Translation of CSIs in Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London"

Translation of Culture-Specific Items (CSIs) in literary texts poses many problems for the translator. Thus, the aim of this book is to reveal what translation principles proposed by Venuti (domestication and foreignisation) and translation strategies named by Davies (preservation, addition, omission, globalisation, localisation, transformation and creation) have been employed when transferring CSIs into Lithuanian translation of Orwell's novel "Down and Out in Paris and London". This book not only introduces the concept of culture, the definition and division of CSIs and their place in the literary translation, reveals the issues of CSIs translation and names possible solutions, but also provides examples of CSIs translation in accordance to their categories and subcategories, names the used translation principles and strategies and discusses various reasons for the choice of the translator.
