Synopsis "Through the Brazilian Wilderness (Annotated)"

Complete text of the 1914 first edition, with Roosevelt's three appendicesThe photographic plates and the index of the 1914 editionPublisher's foreword, final afterword and a note on the textProfiles of Rondon, Kermit Roosevelt and George K. CherrieThe route of the expedition and how an unknown river was measuredGlossary of persons, places, and termsTheodore Roosevelt's Through the Brazilian Wilderness is one of the great exploration narratives of the early twentieth century.Originally published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1914, the book records the Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific Expedition into the Brazilian interior and, above all, the first systematic descent and survey of the River of Doubt. The journey united Roosevelt with Brazilian explorer Colonel Cândido Rondon, his son Kermit, Lieutenant João Lyra, ornithologist George K. Cherrie and a company of Brazilian paddlers and field men.The expedition combined geography and natural history. Rondon and Lyra surveyed the river; Kermit assisted the measurements and performed essential rope and canoe work; Cherrie and other naturalists continued zoological collecting. Meanwhile the river imposed a steadily increasing cost in rapids, portages, canoe losses, hunger, fever, injury and death.By the end of the sixty-day canoe journey, the party had established the relationship of a major river system previously unresolved on contemporary maps and carried its measurements back into the geographical record. The AETERNUS edition restores Roosevelt's work as both literature and expedition document, with an extensive new apparatus covering the expedition's composition, route, surveying method, named participants, natural-history work, losses, geographical achievement and the Brazilian exploration program led by Rondon.ANTHRACITE SERIES · AETERNUS
