Thomas W. Laqueur is an American historian, specialized in cultural history, history of the body and sexuality, as well as the relationship between medicine, gender, and society. He is a professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. His work is noted for a rigorous interdisciplinary approach that combines history, critical theory, and cultural analysis. His style belongs to the academic essay, within the genre of historical non-fiction. Laqueur is widely recognized in the academic field, although to date he has not been awarded any major literary or popular science prizes.

Among his most notable works are Solitary Sex: A Cultural History of Masturbation (2015), Making Sex: Body and Gender from the Greeks to Freud (1990), and The Work of the Dead: A Cultural History of Mortal Remains (2015), all of confirmed authorship. He has also co-edited academic works on the history of medicine and culture, consolidating his place as one of the most influential voices in modern historiography of the body.
