(Wales, 1916 - Oxford, 1990) Roald was born into a wealthy family of Norwegian origin. At the age of four, he lost his father and at seven, he came into contact with the strict British educational system, which he reflected in books like Matilda and Boy. After finishing high school, he started working at the Shell company in Africa, where he was caught by the Second World War. After brief training, he became a pilot for the Royal Air Force. He was assigned to Washington, where he began writing about his war adventures. His foray into the world of children's literature was motivated by the stories he told his four children. His first work was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He also wrote scripts for movies and some of his works have been adapted into films.
