Synopsis "The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross: A Study of the Nature and Origins of Christianity Within the Fertility Cults of the Ancient Near East "

Where did God come from? What do the bible stories really tell us? Who or what was Jesus Christ? This book challenges everything we think we know about the nature of religion. The ancient fertility cult at the heart of Christianity. The living power of cultic rites and symbols. The sacred mushroom as the emblem and embodiment of divinity. The secret meaning of biblical myths. The language of religion that links us to our ancestors. The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross sets out John Allegro's quest through a family tree of languages to find the truth about where Christianity came from.

Carl A. P. Ruck is an American philologist and scholar specialized in Greek mythology and the study of entheogenic substances in religious and cultural contexts. His work falls within the genres of history of religions, ethnobotany, and classical studies, focusing on the use of psychoactive plants in antiquity.

Among his most notable works is The Road to Eleusis (1978), co-written with Albert Hofmann and R. Gordon Wasson, where the role of entheogenic substances in the ancient Eleusinian Mysteries is explored. He is also the author of Sacred Mushrooms of the Goddess (2006), where he analyzes the role of hallucinogenic mushrooms in religious traditions. His work has been influential in understanding the connection between mythology and entheogens.
