Im Jahr 1875 grndete Arnold Janssen die Gesellschaft des Gttlichen Wortes (SVD), einen Missionsorden, der neben der philosophischen und theologischen Ausbildung auch das Interesse an den positiven Wissenschaften pflegt, insbesondere an der Erforschung auereuropischer Kulturen. Die ethnologische Zeitschrift "Anthropos" (1906) und die sinologische Zeitschrift "Monumenta Serica" (1935), sind aus dieser Tradition der Gesellschaft hervorgegangen.
