The burned cross, chopped down for firewood, refused to burn away, and instead brought daily gifts of warmth, bread, and fish. Inspired by this strange magic, Tom wrote a heartfelt letter and gave away the shoes meant to be his first pair - offering them instead to the very man responsible for the cross.
