This volume contains contributions in theoretical linguistics, morphology, syntax, semantics, text linguistics, and phonetics from the 34th Linguistics Colloquium, which took place September 7-10, 1999 at the Faculty of Applied Linguistics and Cultural Studies of the Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz. Together with the second volume, which mainly focuses on issues related to sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and language technology, the book gives a broad overview of the state of the art in linguistics at the end of the 20th century.
