Souvenir T-shirts as Semiotic Landscapes. (Neo-)Colonial Continuity and Subversion
Cassandra Gerber (Author) · De Gruyter Mouton · Hardcover
This book broadens the scope of semiotic landscape research by examining souvenir T-shirts as mobile, embodied semiotic landscapes in tourist destinations such as Zanzibar, Spain and Germany. Using Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis, the author analyses how these material objects function within multilayered tourist landscapes, reproducing neocolonial discourses and their traces while also serving as a means of resistance. The study presented in this book focuses on representations of Africa and its people at tourist sites both on and off the continent. It explores how T-shirts become spaces where language, the body and colonial history collide, creating spaces where commodification and empowerment coexist.
