Shūsaku Endō (1923–1996) fue un destacado novelista japonés, reconocido por explorar el conflicto entre la cultura japonesa y el cristianismo. Nació en Tokio, Japón, y pasó parte de su infancia en Manchuria. Tras el divorcio de sus padres, regresó a Japón con su madre, quien lo introdujo al catolicismo, religión que marcaría profundamente su obra literaria.

Endō estudió literatura francesa en la Universidad de Keio y posteriormente continuó su formación en Francia, donde entró en contacto con la tradición literaria europea. Estas experiencias influyeron en su estilo, caracterizado por una profunda reflexión moral y espiritual.

Entre sus obras más importantes se encuentra Silencio (1966), novela ambientada en el Japón del siglo XVII, que retrata la persecución de los cristianos y plantea dilemas sobre la fe y el sufrimiento.
