Sin duda Edgar Allan Poe pasará a la historia de la literatura por haber conseguido estremecernos con sus historias, con sus relatos y poemas. Poe publicó sesenta y siete cuentos en vida. En el presente libro hemos recopilado aquellos que, por su calidad y el agrado general de la crítica, nos han parecido los más destacable s. Naturalmente, no faltan piezas como “Los crímenes de la calle Morgue”, una de sus historias más inquietantes e innovadoras, y un ejemplo claro de por qué se bautizó a Poe como “el padre de la novela policiaca”. Tampoco podían faltar pequeñas obras maestras de la literatura universal como “El gato negro”, “El pozo y el péndulo”, “Berenice” o “La verdad sobre el caso del señor Valdemar”, donde el autor despliega todo su ingenio y arte a la hora de construir una historia de suspense sin igual. El poeta P. P. Cooke llegó a confesar a Poe que la lectura de “Berenice” le había espeluznado, que era «el más condenadamente verosímil, horrible, espeluznante, impactante e ingenioso capítulo de ficción que nadie pudiese concebir o llevar a cabo».
