F. Charles Brunicardi nació el 10 de mayo de 1954 en Perth Amboy, Nueva Jersey. Se graduó con honores en química en la Johns Hopkins University y obtuvo su título de médico en la Rutgers University School of Medicine en 1980. Durante su formación quirúrgica, completó una residencia en cirugía general en la SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, donde también efectuó un detenido trabajo de investigación sobre fisiología pancreática.

Su trayectoria profesional combina cirugía clínica, investigación translacional y liderazgo académico. Fue profesor en la University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) y posteriormente se incorporó a la Baylor College of Medicine, donde fue Jefe del Departamento de Cirugía. Finalmente, en 2019 fue nombrado Vicepresidente Senior y Decano del Colegio de Medicina de SUNY Downstate.

Brunicardi se especializa en cirugía gastrointestinal y tumores neuroendocrinos, destacándose por su enfoque en medicina personalizada, cirugía mínimamente invasiva y oncología quirúrgica. Es editor principal de la reconocida obra de referencia en cirugía, Schwartz’s Principles of Surgery, y ha publicado cientos de artículos científicos durante su carrera.
