Nach den "Schriften zu Literatur und Theater" (8,1) sowie den "Schriften zu Politik und Bildung" (8,2) werden die "Schriften zur Bildenden Kunst" die 8. Abteilung innerhalb der Historisch-kritischen Ausgabe beschliessen. Sie versammeln insbesondere Denkschriften und Aufsatze, die Stifter als Landeskonservator von Oberosterreich, zu dem er 1853 ernannt worden war, verfasst hat, ebenso die umfanglichen Berichte zu den jahrlichen Ausstellungen des oberosterreichischen Kunstvereins in Linz. Der Fulle der insgesamt 70 Beitrage geschuldet wird auch dieser Band geteilt. Band 8,4 enthalt die Texte Stifters. Band 8,5 enthalt eine Einfuhrung in Stifters Wirken als Landeskonservator, sodann Apparat und Kommentar, einen umfanglichen Bildteil sowie die Gesamtregister der Bande 8,1, 8,2 und 8,4.
