Poeta, memorialista y escritora, nació en Bélgica de padre belga-estadounidense y madre inglesa; la familia dejó Bélgica después del asesinato del archiduque Francisco Fernando. Autora muy prolífica, escribió poesía, novelas, libros infantiles y una obra de teatro, aunque su gran aportación literaria fueron sin duda sus diarios y memorias. Cosmopolita y políticamente comprometida, los temas que recorren sus obras son la amistad, las relaciones, el envejecimiento, la soledad y los derechos de la mujer.
