«El 22 de febrero se nos anunció que regresaríamos a Colombia. Teníamosocho meses de estar en Mobile, Alabama, Estados Unidos, donde el A.R.C.Caldas fue sometido a reparaciones electrónicas y de sus armamentos.Mientras reparaban el buque, los miembros de la tripulación recibíamosuna instrucción especial. En los días de franquicia hacíamos lo quehacen todos los marineros en tierra: íbamos al cine con la novia y nosreuníamos después en Joe Palooka, una taberna del puerto, dondetomábamos whisky y armábamos una bronca de vez en cuando.Mi novia se llamaba Mary Address, la conocí dos meses después de estaren Mobile, por intermedio de la novia de otro marino. Aunque tenía unagran facilidad para aprender el castellano, creo que Mary Address nosupo nunca por qué mis amigos le decían «María Dirección». Cada vez quetenía franquicia la invitaba al cine, aunque ella prefería que lainvitara a comer helados. Nos entendíamos en mi medio inglés y en sumedio español, pero nos entendíamos siempre, en el cine o comiendohelados.»Con este libro, Gabriel García Márquez se descubrió a sí mismo como unnarrador. Sin embargo, la intención primera era escribir un reportajesobre un hombre, Luis Alejandro Velasco, que estuvo diez días a laderiva en una balsa mecida por el mar Caribe. El futuro Nobel deLiteratura y entonces joven reportero que era García Márquez escuchó elrelato de los hechos de boca de su protagonista y lo transformó, tal vezsin pretenderlo, en un prodigiosoejercicio literario, una narración escueta y vigorosa donde late elpulso de un gran escritor. La publicación por entregas del reportaje enEl Espectador de Bogotá supuso un alboroto político considerable -serevelaba la existencia de contrabando ilegal en un buque de la Armadacolombiana, lo que costó la vida de siete marineros y el naufragio, másafortunado, de Velasco- y el exilio para su autor.

Gabriel García Márquez (1927-2014), son of the Colombian Caribbean and immortal voice of Spanish narrative, is one of the most influential literary minds of the 20th century. Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982, his talent transcended the boundaries of paper: he was a novelist, short story writer, essayist, screenwriter, film critic, and above all, a thinker committed to the pains and hopes of his homeland and all of Latin America. Architect of magical realism, he masterfully wove the everyday and the fantastic, making reality blur among yellow butterflies, eternal rains, and towns where the impossible was part of everyday life. His work gave life to a unique narrative universe, where history breathes, dreams, and bleeds intensely.

Among his most emblematic titles are One Hundred Years of Solitude, No One Writes to the Colonel, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, The General in His Labyrinth, Love in the Time of Cholera, and Strange Pilgrims, among others. In 2002 he opened the door to his memory with Living to Tell the Tale. In 2012, All the Stories were published, and, as if literary destiny refused to close the curtain on him, in 2024 his posthumous and unpublished novel See You in August was released.
