Adolph Erman (1806-1877) war ein deutscher Physiker und Geologe. In den Jahren zwischen 1828 bis 1830 unternahm er eine Weltreise, die er selbst finanzierte. Sein Ziel war es, ein engmaschiges Netz für die magnetische Bestimmung des Erdumfangs zu erhalten. Seine Ergebnisse und Reiseerfahrungen veröffentlichte er in einem Werk, welches in eine historische und eine physikalische Abtheilung unterteilt wurde.
