In dem hier vorliegenden ersten Band beschreibt der Autor Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied auf sehr kurzweilige und interessante Art die spannende und abenteuerliche Expedition nach Brasilien. Er geht hierbei auf seine Reiseerlebnisse in Rio de Janeiro, die Weiterreise nach Cabo Frio bis zum Rio Grande über S. Salvador dos Campos und viele weitere Orte ein. Dieses einmalige Werk enthält Abbildungen und wunderbare Schilderungen der Reiseroute aus der damaligen Zeit. Prinz Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782 - 1867) war ein deutscher Entdecker, Ethnologe, Zoologe und Naturforscher. Er trug nach dem Vorbild der Humboldts durch zwei mehrjährige Expeditionsreisen und ihre Auswertung in zahlreichen Publikationen Wesentliches zur Botanik, Zoologie und Ethnologie bei. Die Universität Jena verlieh ihm 1858 die Ehrendoktorwürde.
