ESTA es una antología muy particular, que incluye a veintiocho poetas latinoamericanos que dieron sus vidas por la causa revolucionaria. La mayoría de ellos murieron en plena juventud. Algunos de estos poetas perecieron en combate o cumpliendo misiones insurreccionales; otros, en prisión; los más, torturados; los hay que desaparecieron sin nunca más saber de ellos y los que aparecieron con el cuerpo acribillado. Algunos fueron asesinados cuando estaban desarmados o incluso cuando dormían. Todos eran militantes revolucionarios y en consecuencia habían asumido su compromiso, aceptando el riesgo de morir por la causa y la patria que defendían. Si unos eran revolucionarios que, además, escribían versos, la mayoría eran verdaderos poetas que se sumaron a la lucha revolucionaria. Aquí aparecen todos juntos para mostrarnos que cuando se entrega la vida por una causa, los demás matices se diluyen. MARIO BENEDETTI

Mario Benedetti was born in Paso de los Toros, Uruguay in 1920. He was educated at a German school and made a living as a stenographer, cashier, salesperson, accountant, public servant, translator, and journalist, a profession he practiced for four decades at the weekly Marcha, until it was shut down by the dictatorship. That same dictatorship forced him into exile in 1973, after which he lived successively in Argentina, Peru, Cuba, and Spain. A storyteller, poet, essayist, and playwright, he authored more than seventy books translated into eighteen languages. Among his literary works, the poetic anthologies Inventario and Inventario Dos, the novels La tregua, Gracias por el fuego, Primavera con una esquina rota, the short story collections Montevideanos, La muerte y otras sorpresas, Con y sin nostalgia, and the verse novel El cumpleaños de Juan Ángel stand out.
