Este libro nos invita a dialogar con algunas escuelas e investigadores proclives a las pedagogías críticas que surgieron en momentos de tensión política y económica en Europa, Latinoamérica y Norteamérica. Acentúa en algunas prácticas pedagógicas desarrolladas en Colombia desde mediados del siglo XX y hace un recorrido ameno sobre un proyecto educativo de gran vigencia.
Sitúa el origen de esta opción pedagógica en las Escuelas de Frankfurt y Budapest. Con este pretexto conversa de manera ágil con Habermas, Foucault, Bordieu, Freire, Fals Borda, Apple, MacLaren y Giroux. Se detiene brevemente en Colombia para describir el Movimiento Pedagógico Colombiano, la Teología de la Liberación, el controvertido proyecto de Acción Cultural Popular (ACPO) y otras pedagogías populares con alusiones a sus más destacados representantes.
