Der Campo Santo Teutonico ist der Sitz einer historischen Bruderschaft und eines exponierten Priesterkollegs im Vatikan. Ausgesprochen rege ging es am Campo Santo zwischen dem Untergang des Kirchenstaats 1870 und dem Ersten Weltkrieg zu. Die deutschen Katholiken in Rom sahen sich hin- und hergerissen zwischen der Solidaritat mit dem Gefangenen im Vatikan und der Integration in das protestantisch gepragte deutsche Kaiserreich. Anton de Waal (1837-1917), Rektor des Campo Santo in jenen Jahren, hielt als Strippenzieher des romischen Ultramontanismus die Faden in der Hand. Unter ihm trat die Nationalstiftung des Campo Santo in die grosse Geschichte zwischen Vatikan, dem geeinten Italien, dem Deutschen Reich und der Habsburger Monarchie ein. Aus dieser Spannung lebt die Faszination dieses Ortes der Deutschen in Rom bis heute.
