At the center of this society is the Bennet family, with its five marriageable daughters. Mrs. Bennet sees marriage as the only hope for her girls as they risk losing much of their estate after the death of their father. She's overjoyed, then, at the news of the arrival of a single man "of considerable fortune" to the neighborhood: Charles Bingley. La novela describe poco más de un año en la vida de un pequeño grupo de jóvenes en el campo cerca de Londres en el cambio de siglo (del XVIII al XIX), durante el reinado de Jorge III. En el centro de esta sociedad se encuentra la adorable y muy alocada familia Bennet, con sus cinco hijas casaderas, de entre 15 y 23 años (de mayor a menor: Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty y Lydia). La señora Bennet ve el matrimonio como única esperanza para sus hijas, pues tras la muerte del señor Bennet las jóvenes quedarán abandonadas a su suerte cuando el señor Collins (heredero de todo, debido a que la propiedad forma parte de un mayorazgo) tome posesión. El mayorazgo sólo se transmite por linaje masculino, de manera que, al fallecimiento del padre, la madre y las hijas perderán la mayor parte de la fortuna. La señora Bennet está muy emocionada por las noticias de la llegada de un hombre soltero "de considerable fortuna" al vecindario: Charles Bingley. El señor Bingley ha alquilado la finca Netherfield, donde planea establecerse temporalmente con sus dos hermanas, la señorita Bingley y la señora Hurst, así como su cuñado, el señor Hurst. La señora Bennet espera casar a alguna de sus hijas con el señor Bingley.

She was a British novelist who lived during the Georgian era. She was born in the rectory of Steventon (Hampshire). Her family belonged to the British gentry (rural nobility or agrarian bourgeoisie), a context she never left and in which she set all her works, always revolving around the marriage of her protagonist.

She has been portrayed in cinema on numerous occasions, sometimes faithfully reproduced, like the 1940 classic Pride and Prejudice directed by Robert Z. Leonard and starring Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier, and other times adapted to modern times, as is the case with Clueless, a loose adaptation of Emma. Other versions include Sense and Sensibility from 1995; Mansfield Park from 2000; and Pride and Prejudice in 2004 (directed by Gurinder Chadha) and in 2005 (directed by Joe Wright). However, the most faithful and perfect version of the book Pride and Prejudice to date is the series presented by the BBC starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. The interest that Jane Austen's work continues to arouse today shows the relevance of her thought and the influence she has had on subsequent literature. Her life has also been portrayed in film with the movie Becoming Jane (2007)
