Peter Englund was born on April 4, 1957 in Boden. He is a historian and writer. He was elected a member of the Swedish Academy on May 23, 2002 and took office on December 20 of the same year. Since June 1, 2009, he has been the permanent secretary of the Academy. He has held a chair in Historical and Social Narrative at the University College of Film, Radio, Television and Theatre in Stockholm since 2001; he is the youngest member of the Academy. Among other awards, he has received the August Prize in 1993 and the Selma Lagerlöf Literature Prize in 2002.
