Este texto fue escrito en 1938 por uno de los grandes pensadores del siglo XX. Muestra tanto la radicalidad con la que Nietzsche rechazó el cristianismo como las diversas declaraciones totalmente incompatibles con tal rechazo. Karl Jaspers interpreta esta contradicción diciendo que Nietzsche jamás llegó a asumir las ideas cristianas. Por lo tanto, tampoco tuvo necesidad de rechazar nada que previamente hubiera aceptado. Sin embargo, la fuerza de estos impulsos cristianos, aun despojados de contenido, sí que constituyó la base del pensamiento de Nietzsche hasta su filosofía tardía. Estos impulsos lo llevaron a postular su revisión de todos los valores. Nietzsche dio el paso a la edad posnihilista con todo el arrojo y la pretensión de absolutez que tenían los primeros cristianos, pero sin compartir sus valores. La interpretación que hace Jaspers en este libro se basa en todo el proceso filosófico de Nietzsche que, reflejándose en la historia universal, parte del cristianismo y a través del nihilismo conduce hasta la idea del hombre superior.

Karl Jaspers (Oldenburg, 1883 - Basel, 1969), psychopathologist and philosopher, was one of the most significant voices of the 20th century. In 1909, he graduated in medicine, and in 1914 began his teaching career, first as a professor of psychology and, later, in 1922, as a professor of philosophy at the University of Heidelberg. Between 1930 and 1945, he was removed from his chair by the Nazis. He rejoined the University of Heidelberg after the war ended, and in 1948 moved to Switzerland to teach at the University of Basel. Among his vast output, notable works include Psychology of World Views, Philosophy from the Standpoint of Existence, Man in the Modern Age, On Truth, and Artistic Genius and Madness, Strindberg and Van Gogh (Cliff 2001)
