Michael Crichton (Chicago, Illinois, October 23, 1942 - Los Angeles, California, November 4, 2008) was an American writer, screenwriter, director, and film producer. Famous for his work in the genres of science fiction, suspense, and medical fiction. More than two hundred million literary copies of his works have been sold, most of them bestsellers, which have been translated into more than thirty-eight languages, and of which twelve have been made into films.

His novels often feature elements of the action genre and focus on a strong technological component. In fact, Crichton is considered the pioneer of the techno-thriller narrative genre. His novels often explore future scientific and technological advances that end in biotechnology disasters. Crichton is known for being the father of Jurassic Park and also of the prestigious TV series ER. He is the only person who has simultaneously had, in the United States, the best-selling book —Disclosure—, the number one movie at the box office —Jurassic Park—, and the television series with the highest viewership —ER—.
