Intentó crear en el el país esa literatura del paisaje y los personajes nacionales con el bagaje estético-ideológico de los románticos y socialistas utópicos europeos.Cuento o cuadro de costumbres con fuerte denuncia política y social, El Matadero -escrito entre 1838 y 1840- es un texto militante contra el rosismo que, curiosamente, Echeverría evitó publicar durante su exilio en Montevideo porque no compartía la política unitaria, en especial sus alianzas con los imperios europeos.'

José Esteban Echeverría Espinosa (Buenos Aires, September 2, 1805 - Montevideo, January 19, 1851) was an Argentine writer and poet who introduced Romanticism in his country. A member of the so-called Generation of '37, he is the author of works such as Socialist Dogma, The Captive, and The Slaughterhouse, among others.
