Synopsis "Marx and Democracy with Chinese Characteristics"

With the start of the millennium, a new kind of selfconsciousness came about among Chinesepoliticians. Did these changes lead to a retreat from the free market towards a more democraticsociety, orientated around Marxist ideas? In how far does Marx's heritage still play a role in the modern construction of society? The book gives a short overview over the development of socialist democracy and analyzesarticles of the newspaper "People's Daily", the main daily publication of the party, concerningdemocracy in modern China. Furthermore, it compares the idea of democracy popularizedin society on the one side and as developed by the philosopher Karl Marx on the other; taking intoaccount the concept that problems in society repeat themselves and take place according to a historical pattern.
