Kazuo Koike (Ōmagari, Japan, May 8, 1936 – April 17, 2019) was an influential manga scriptwriter, novelist, and Japanese lyricist. He is widely recognized for his contribution to the seinen genre, characterized by mature and complex stories. Among his most notable works are Lone Wolf and Cub (1970–1976), in collaboration with Gōseki Kojima; Lady Snowblood (1972–1973), alongside Kazuo Kamimura; and Crying Freeman (1986–1988), with Ryōichi Ikegami. These series have been adapted to various media and have notably influenced popular culture, both in Japan and internationally.

In addition to his work as a scriptwriter, Koike founded the Gekigasonjuku manga school in 1977, where he trained prominent creators such as Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma ½) and Tetsuo Hara (Fist of the North Star). His narrative style is characterized by a combination of stylized violence, psychological depth, and detailed historical context. In recognition of his career, he was inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2004 and received the Inkpot Award in 2006.

Gōseki Kojima (Yokkaichi, Japan, November 3, 1928 – January 5, 2000) was a prominent Japanese mangaka, known for his mastery in the gekiga genre, characterized by mature and realistic narratives. He began his artistic career painting movie posters and working in kamishibai, a form of paper theater. He debuted in manga in 1957 with Onmitsu Kuroyoden. His most famous collaboration was with screenwriter Kazuo Koike, forming a creative duo that marked a milestone in manga history.

Among his most notable works is Lone Wolf and Cub (1970–1976), a series that redefined samurai manga. Other notable collaborations with Koike include Samurai Executioner (1972–1976) and Path of the Assassin (1978–1984), which explores the life of the ninja Hattori Hanzō. His detailed and expressive artistic style has influenced numerous artists and has been internationally recognized, being posthumously inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2004.
