A petición de la Secretaría de Educación Pública, Gabriela Mistral llegó a México a compartirnos sus conocimientos pedagógico - sociales y a trabajar en el andamiaje educativo que José Vasconcelos iniciaba . Una de las labores que Mistral realizó en nuestro país fue la selección de Lecturas para mujeres, con la intención de acercar una literatura básica de índole cultural artística para la mujer. Incorpora muchos textos propios escritos especialmente para este libro. El presente florilegio atendió las siguientes cualidades : la intención moral y a veces social, belleza y amenidad. Los temas tratados bien pueden agruparse en tres rubros : hogar, México y la América española y motivos espirituales. El primero se destina a robustecer el espíritu de familia, ennoblecedor de la vida; el segundo busca la descripción de ambientes y de panoramas, sin olvidar la biografía heroica; la tercera sección incluye los grandes asuntos humanos, aquellos que le tocan a la mujer tanto como al hombre ; la justicia social , el trabajo y la naturaleza.

Gabriela Mistral (Vicuña, Elqui Valley 1889 - New York, 1957) Pseudonym of Lucila de María Godoy Alcayaga. She was a poet, diplomat, and teacher from an early age. The publication of Desolation brought Mistral international recognition and prestige, making her considered one of the greatest promises of Latin American literature and a leading figure in Chilean and Hispanic-American literature of the 20th century. In 1945, she won the Nobel Prize in Literature and, only six years later, the National Prize for Literature.
