La turbulenta niñez y adolescencia de San Agustín dejó paso, según nos lo cuenta él mismo, a una primera juventud ciertamente tórrida, en la que con frecuencia confundió la búsqueda de esposa con la satisfacción de necesidades algo más primarias. Sin embargo, en esa primera juventud, primero en Roma y más tarde en Milán, se dedicó también, cuando sus pulsiones se lo permitían, a la búsqueda de la verdad. Confundió muchas veces el camino, unas veces entre los oradores, otras entre los maniqueos, pero al menos descubrió que la vida no tenía sentido (y que no había lugar ni a la belleza ni al bien) si no se encaminaba a encontrarla. Creyó alcanzarla en vida, y esto le hizo merecedor de la fulminante condena de Nietzsche, pero la condena y la salvación pertenecen ambas al mismo registro histórico.

Saint Augustine of Hippo (354–430 AD) was a philosopher, theologian, and father of the Latin Church, whose work had a profound influence on Christian and Western thought. Converted to Christianity after an intense spiritual search, he became the bishop of Hippo and wrote extensively on theology, ethics, and the human condition. His texts combine philosophical depth with an intense inner life, and are key in the development of medieval and modern Christian thought.

Among his most important works are Confessions (397–400), The City of God (413–426), On the Trinity (400–416), Soliloquies (386), and Christian Doctrine (397). His output, mostly in the philosophical-theological genre, addresses the relationship between faith and reason, the soul, time, and the good. His writings continue to be widely studied, although there are no contemporary awards associated with his work.
