Die Forschungsschwerpunkte des germanistischen und skandinavistischen Mediävisten Paul Herrmann (1866-1930) lagen in der germanischen und nordischen Mythologie und Religion sowie Sagen- und Volkskunde. Herrmann unternahm Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts mehrere Forschungsreisen zu der Vulkaninseln Island, dessen Amtssprache Sprache Isländisch, zu der germansischen Sprachfamilie zählt. Das Werk umfasst insgesamt drei Bände und gibt nicht nur wissenschaftliche Beobachtungen wieder, sondern liefert einen autobiographischen Reisebericht. Der vorliegende erste Band, beschäftigt sich vorwiegend mit Land und Leuten Islands. Sorgfältig bearbeiteter Nachdruck der Originalausgabe aus dem Jahre 1907.
