Synopsis "Hermann Gunkel - Eine Biographie (in German)"

English summary: Hermann Gunkel is considered one of the most significant representatives of protestant bible studies of the post-Julius Wellhausen generation. As one of the co-founders and chief representative of the Religionsgeschichtliche Schule (school of the history of religions) he established highly innovative methodological approaches to the Old and the New Testament. Indeed, all of his major publications were milestones in research history. His commentary on Genesis and his various readings of the Psalms have become classics in 20th century protestant bible exegesis. His name remains inextricably linked with genre-historical interpretation of biblical texts. Drawing on previously unpublished archival sources, Konrad Hammann contextualizes the life and work of Gunkel within his time and in the research discourse of his discipline. German description:
