Frank Patrick Herbert was born in Tacoma, Washington (1920). Before turning to science fiction, he had various jobs, from photographer and TV cameraman to oyster fisherman. In 1965, he introduced the book series The Dune Chronicles, which was critically acclaimed and popular, describing an imaginary world with its own politics, ecology, and social structure.
The first book of the saga, Dune, was a true literary phenomenon and won the Nebula and Hugo Awards, as well as the International Fantasy Award, which he shared with Lord of the Flies by William Golding. He died on February 11, 1986. The rest of the saga includes: Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse: Dune.
