Synopsis "Handbook of Viral and Rickettsial Hemorrhagic Fevers"

The name “Chikungunya fever” was first used to describe a prominent feature presented by patients observed in the first-described outbreak of this disease in Tanzania in 1952. Chikungunya fever is caused by a virus (CHIK) of the Alphavirus group which is transmitted by mosquitoes. CHIK virus is classified in the genus Alphavirus within the family Togaviridae. CHIK virus has frequently been isolated from canopy-frequenting species Aedes africanus and Aedes furcifer-taylori, both of which feed readily on baboons and vervet monkeys. Most human infections are acquired in rural areas, sometimes in areas which have recently been cleared of indigenous bush vegetation or in areas adjacent to indigenous bush. Infection can be avoided by avoiding the rural areas where epidemics are known to occur. One of the characteristic laboratory findings in Chikungunya fever is a marked leucopenia often associated with a significant fall in the number of platelets.
