Schwefelwasserstoff (H2S) wurde vor kurzem als ein sehr wichtiger Gasotransmitter mit neuroprotektiven, antioxidativen, entzündungshemmenden, gefä erweiternden, antiapoptotischen und angiogenen Funktionen sowohl unter physiologischen als auch unter pathologischen Bedingungen anerkannt. Wenn es methyliert wird, entsteht Methanthiol (CH3SH), beides die unangenehmsten Gase, die für Mundgeruch verantwortlich sind. In dieser klinischen Cross-over-Studie wurde die Wirksamkeit von Spülungen auf der Basis von Chlorhexidin (CHX) oder ätherischen Ölen (EO) mit und ohne Alkohol bei der Senkung der H2S- und CH3SH-Werte untersucht.
