Christian Handschuh behandelt in dieser Kardinal-Bertram-Stipendiatenarbeit Leben und Werk des geburtigen Breslauers Georg Smolka (1901-1982). Smolkas Wirken verlief in der Vorkriegszeit im Spannungsbogen zwischen der Ubersetzertatigkeit bei der NS-nahen Publikationsstelle der "Nord- und ostdeutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft" unter Albert Brackmann und Kontakten zu Widerstandskreisn um Prof. Kurt Huber und P. Alfred Delp. Nach 1945 erhielt Smolka eine Professur an der Staatlichen Akademie fur Verwaltungswissenschaften in Speyer. Als Prasident des Heimatwerkes Schlesischer Katholiken setzte er sich vehement fur die Idee eines ubernationalen Europa und die Versohnung mit den polnischen Nachbarn ein.
